RADIOTHERAPY

Radiation therapy or Radiotherapy is the medical use of ionizing radiation to control malignant cells. Radiotherapy is commonly applied to the cancer tumor because of its ability to control cell growth. Radiation is prescribed by radiation oncologist (doctor) with intent to cure- CURATIVE or may be used for Symptom Control - Palliative treatment.

Modalities:

• External Beam therapy or Teletherapy (Treatment from distance) Relates to the beam of radiation delivered externally to the patient from several directions.
• Brachytherapy.

The department is equipped with:

1. Linear Accelerator (Elekta Synergy): It is a latest machine used for external beam radiation treatment (Teletherapy)for cancer patient. It delivers high energy x-ray or electrons to the region of patient’s tumor. This treatment can be designed in such a way that they destroy the cancer cells while sparing the surrounding normal tissues. It is used to treat all body sites by 3-D conformal,IMRT, IGRT, VMAT techniques.
2. Theratron-780E (Cobalt) Teletherapy unit. Installed in 1998 and still functional, is a machine. which uses gamma rays from the radio-isotope Cobalt-60 to treat cancer patients. It is also a external beam radiotherapy machine

•  SagiNova Cobalt 60 HDR Brachytherapy - It is used for placing sealed radioactive source precisely in close proximity of the area to be treated.

The department is equipped with High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy unit. It is used to treat primarily gynecological malignancies (Ca. Cervix, Ca. Body uterus) Skin Cancer, Breast Cancer, Esophagus, Prostate & tracheal tumors.

Bebig SagiNova Cobalt 60 HDR Brachytherapy 

• Department has dedicated operation theatre to carry out Brachytherapy procedures.
• CT Simulator:-It is a procedure used during the treatment planning stage to identify the exact location and size of the area that needs treatment.

Patients coming to Sri Guru Ramdas Rotary Cancer Hospital are fortunate to experience the latest CT Simulation technology – Somatom Definition AS Open 20 slice machine.

Treatment Planning Systems 2D and 3D treatment planning systems for planning radiotherapy treatment of Cancer patients on both Cobalt and Linear Accelerator respectively.

TPS PLANNING STATION

Elekta Planning Workspace for the planning of 3D-CRT, IMRT, VMAT and Electron treatment on Elekta Synergy Linear Accelerator

 Radiation Protection

• Gamma Zone Monitors available in Cobalt Teletherapy unit room and Brachytherapy unit room.

 Mould Room Facilities:

• Hot Water Bath available
• Thermoplastic Precuts for all sites

Chemotherapy:

• Hospital is equipped with facilities for giving Cancer Chemotherapy (anti-cancer drugs) to cancer patients.
• Chemotherapy is given on out-patient and In-patient basis both at nominal charges.
• There are four air- conditioned wards with refrigerator and TV facilities.
• There is one 16-bedded, in-patient ward.
• Chemotherapy- medicine mixing facility chamber is functional

CHEMOTHERAPY MEDICINE MIXING CHAMBER   

• We have qualified staff for the same.
• Also hospital has facility for chemo port and PICC line catheler insertion for administering chemotherapy.

SURGERY:

• Hospital has qualified Surgical Oncologists and all types of Cancer Surgeries are performed.
• Facility for histopathology and immune-histo chemistry for all biopsy/ surgery specimen is available with pathology department.

Palliative treatment- We have qualified staff for Counseling terminally ill Cancer patients and administering pain control medications.

DIETICIAN:

• Provides dietary advice for cancer patient

PHARMACY:

• Round the clock- to dispense cancer chemotherapy medicines.
